Passport holders will be able to choose gender without birth certificate proof.
The State Department announced on Wednesday that people who are applying for passports in the United States will no longer need to provide proof of their gender on birth certificates. The changes will allow individuals to choose to have the symbol “M” or “F” under the gender category on the document without needing a birth certificate that matches. In the past, trans individuals have had to have their birth certificates amended before updating their passports.
In addition to updating the guidelines for choosing sex on passports, the State Department is also looking into adding a new symbol other than “M” or “F” to include those who are “non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming.” Secretary Blinken said, “The Department of State is committed to promoting the freedom, dignity, and equality of all people – including LGBTQI+ persons.”
